About
South Aussies for
Animals
Our mission is to protect animals
South Aussies for Animals (SAFA) was set up as an incorporated, not-for-profit body in 2021. Here”s what we do:
- lobby for improvements to animals protection laws;
- provide information to the public on issues and actions to take;
- network with other animal protection groups to support positive actions by government.
Many animals suffer as a result of human actions. Fortunately, however, there are also many compassionate people who want to see an end to this suffering but often don’t know what they can do. That’s where SAFA comes in – to provide opportunities to the caring public to lobby for change.for
Actions so far
- Seek commitments for increased animal protection from both major parties before the 2022 state election;
- Lobby for a complete ban on bow hunting;
- Video the cruelty of duck shooting at Lake George on the opening day of March 18 2023. Make written and oral submissions to the inquiry into duck shooting, calling for a ban;
- Run a workshop on animals in research, and lobby for changes such as increased transparency (publish animal use statistics), and increased support for alternatives to animals (award PhD scholarships for non-animal biomedical research);
- Run a workshop on improvements to the Animal Welfare Act, and make a submission to the review of the Act;
- Make a submission to the review of the Residential Tenancies Act, calling for the right of renters to have pets;
- Seek improvements in cat management, especially free desexing for semi-owned/unowned cats, and owned cats in low SES areas.
